In this session we will explore making and maker spaces and their role in early educational science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) friendly early childhood environments. We will also talk about the history and terminology of making and the importance it can have in empowering even the youngest children’s curiosity and learning in science and beyond. Throughout the workshop, we will explain the importance of giving children access to making as a form of transformative change that will lead to stronger classroom dynamics and help children see themselves as empowered agents of change. Thinking routines from Agency by Design's Early Childhood in the Making project will also be shared. Participants will leave with ideas and resources for creating their first maker space and gain the confidence to share these important spaces with teachers, families, and especially children.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will learn that making is an accessible activity for children of all ages; explore how making can promote opportunities for developmentally appropriate, project-based learning and adaptive curriculums; gain an awareness of children’s need for early exposure to STEM opportunities, especially children who may not have this access outside of the school’s program; develop an understanding of the importance of providing intentional high-quality interactive environments that promote all children’s learning; and identify one person they will share the information about making with.
